Nursing

The nursing home industry incident rate is 13.9 injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers. This is more than double the incident rate of 6.1 of industry as a whole.

These shoulder, back, and arm injuries appear to be the direct result of patient handling issues.

Due to the patient handling issues that plague the nursing industry, OSHA recently released its Ergonomic Guidelines for Nursing Homes - and is making steady progress in implementing its ergonomics strategy.

These guidelines offer practical recommendations based on methods proven to be successful in the nursing industry. They incorporate best practices already in effect within the industry, in conjunction with, information from trade and professional associations, labor organizations, the medical community, state OSHA programs, and scientific research.
